A certain boy named James Undie(aged 16) was allegedly beaten to death over the weekend by some members of the National Youths Council of Nigeria(NYCN) in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State on the allegation that he stole the sum of fifteen thousand naira(#15000 Naira) from his dad.
According to reports, the boy’s dad alleged that his missing 15,000 Naira was taken by his child and that he supposingly spent the stolen money with his friend.
So in order to make him confess, the dad handed the boy over to some members of the National Youths Council of Nigeria(NYCN) – who then seriously beat and torture him to death.
The ugly incident prompted an outbreak of violence by the youths of the area in response to the alleged killing of the teenager. Two other people were said to have been killed and properties worth millions destroyed during the violence outbreak.
DSP Irene Ugbo, the Cross River State Police Command Spokesman said that the boy’s dad as well as some members of NYCN that carried out the torture have been arrested for interrogation and further investigations
In response to the situation in the state, Mr Maxwell Obo, the National Youths Council of Nigeria(NYCN) Chairman in the state said the issue was being taken care of in order to fish out members of the council that allegedly tortured the teenager to death.
“I cannot understand why the father should hand over his son for torture because he stole his money. He as the father ought to have handled it personally without involving third person”,- said Mr. Maxwell Obo
Meanwhile, Mr Maxwell Obo also added that “the call by certain individuals for the disbandment of the National Youths Council of Nigeria(NYCN) in Cross River state was superfluous as the incident doesn’t mean the association is uncivilized
