Chelsea Beats Newcastle To Move To The Top Of The Premier League Table

Chelsea’s dominance in the opening minutes of the game rewarded them with the opener, that came from the  unfortunate Newcastle defender Federico Fernandez.

Federico Fernandez got his feet in a muddle at the back post under pressure from Ben Chilwell  and could only poke the ball in from Mason Mount’s cross to gift the Blues an own goal lead into the 10th  minutes of the game.

Timo Werner who had earlier on missed a few chances, picked the ball around the opponent’s half way line and did superbly to get through a couple of the home side players before setting up Abraham to make it 2-0 in favour of the visitors.

The German Forward Timo Werner previously had his goal rules off for offside after collecting the ball from Ziyech’s pass and beautifully rounded the keeper to score.

Chelsea in addition to Werner’s woes, missed a couple of other chances from Mount and second half Sub Oliver Giroud but still cling on to their lead to move up to the top of the premier league table

The home side had their own chances from likes of Sean Longstaff with apowerful strike to the crossbar, Almiron’s deflect effort that got pushed wide by Mendy following a corner and Andy Carroll’s effort in the visitors box that got diverted into the side-netting

Meanwhile, Chelsea went into the game on the 5th position have now moved up to the top of the Table following their victory over Newcastle; but the blues could be pushed back down to 2nd position if Tottenham wins Man City.

They have now kept Six clean sheets in seven match(in all competition) and also on a five games win in a row.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

“We didn’t do enough in the first half and got off to an awful start. And against the big boys the one thing you can’t do is gift them an opener, it’d hard enough.

“Second half I thought we were much better, we had a few opportunities and in the big key moments you have to take one of them.

“So in the second half there was a lot of pleasing points, but it was a very difficult afternoon against an excellent Chelsea team.

“It’s a soft goal we’ve given away and the second is a bit soft too. We have to be a lot more cunning and create a foul there.

“It’s always difficult against a top, top team, they are as good a side as you see in Europe at the minute. But we have to have a bit more belief in what we do, and we will.”

On the continued absence of fans: “They stayed with us in the game last year and the crowd was unbelievable in their attitude towards the team. All the big clubs miss the atmosphere. Of course we would like them back but so would everyone else too.”

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

“I’m pleased. It’s a tough match to come here after the international break, the players have all been away.

“We dominated the game, we could have scored more goals. But the lads dealt with it very well.

“We lost here last year so it’s good progression to come here and get the right result.

“We’ve all seen these games before, Newcastle became more positive at the start of the second half, their press was more progressive.

“But as long as Timo has the pace and positive nature he showed for Tammy’ s goal then that’s a big threat for us

“You are always tested in different ways in these league, balance is really important and, we are working towards that.

“We have to think about the big picture and there is improvement and work to be done.

“We need the squad, we need everybody. It’s a grueling season as everyone keeps saying and it’s good for the team’s confidence that we got another clean sheet.”

Chelsea will travel to France on Tuesday to face Rennes in Group E of the Champions League and later on  host Spurs on Sunday, 29 November.

While Newcastle are to visit Crystal Palace in the Premier League next Friday.
